The Average Guy’s Guide to Losing Weight: Page 4
The Gym Gyms have become very popular in recent years and they have started popping up everywhere. You may think to yourself “Well, I’m just not a ‘Gym Person’”. I did. I’d never been into a gym in my life. But a work colleague told me about a gym down the road from my building and it turned out to be affordable (I was saving a lot of money on snacks and soft drinks) so I rang them up, and with some trepidation I went down there and had a look. I was expecting to see toned, muscly young guys and women who would put me to shame with my weak and saggy 38 year old physique, but what I found instead was mainly people about my age and in my sort of shape. In other words, people who were there because they needed to be there, so I wasn’t intimidated.
If you decide to supplement your exercise routine with a few visits to the gym, make sure you have a gym circuit drawn up for you by a qualified trainer. This person will work at the gym. Just make sure you see them before you get started on any of the weights or machines or you could really do yourself some damage.
What I have learned since going to the gym is that any less than 2 visits per week isn’t really going to do you much good, and that you probably shouldn’t be going every day. Your muscles actually get damaged when you lift weights, and so you need a day off in-between visits for the muscle tissue to repair itself. It is this process of damage and repair that builds the muscles. The gym work is good because while dropping the fat you’re also seeing some tone starting to develop, but be warned, you’re not going to be Mr Universe overnight. Just like dieting, gym work needs to be a long-term commitment. My initial inspiration was seeing Johnny Depp’s abdominal muscles in a movie and thinking “wouldn’t it be great to have a stomach like that”. Well, four months of gym later, I’m still not there, in fact I’m not even half way there, but I’m a hell of a lot more toned than I would be if I hadn’t been going.
Water (the other secret weapon)
By this stage we’re starting to build a little list of basic rules. The first rule is to NEVER eat anything that’s on the forbidden list. The second rule is to go for at least half an hours walk every day. The third rule (and you may not have previously known about this one) is that you must drink lots and lots of water. Water is fantastic if you’re trying to lose weight. It does lots of good things;
- It doesn’t put on ANY weight
- It’s a great thirst quencher (works much better than sugary soft-drinks)
- It cleans out (de-toxifies) your body
- It makes you feel (kind of) full and helps banish the food cravings you may be experiencing
- It helps the body to metabolise fat into energy

Yes, drinking lots of water can actually increase the rate that your body burns up those fat cells during exercise, so drink lots of water. “How much should I drink” you ask . well, the dieticians probably have an answer for you and I’m sure you’ll race off and find out once you’re done reading this. But basically you would do well to replace everything you currently drink with water . then have more water. Keep a jug of it in the fridge and every time you pour a glass, fill it back up again. Whenever you need to go to the fridge for a between-meal snack, have a glass of water instead. Take a bottle of cold water in the car with you, or the bus. At work, replace your cup of coffee with a glass of water. The great thing about this stuff is that you literally can’t have too much. The more the better.
What to eat, when and how much? OK, we’ve talked about the kinds of foods you should steer completely clear of, but we haven’t discussed what kinds of things you should be eating. In my opinion this is the part of dieting that turns the average guy right off the idea of even bothering. If you’re anything like me, you just don’t have the time in your life to be constantly worrying about how many calories are contained in this or that plate of food. That was the case for me, and in the end I didn’t bother reading any diet books and just used my common sense instead.
First up, obviously, eat less. Breakfast is important, so make sure you have something there. Keep it healthy, If you’re anything like me, mornings aren’t exactly a time for lounging around, it’s basically sleep until you absolutely HAVE to get up, then shower, shave etc, get in the car and race off to work. In this situation fruit is good. Have a stock of fresh apples in the fridge. Grab one or two before you leave the house and there’s your breakfast. If you’re a cereal and milk guy, start using one of the low-fat milks (don’t worry, you’ll get used to it) and switch to a cereal without any sugar. A sandwich or toast is OK, but use as little margarine as possible, and if you can use something other than cheese, do.
