50 Easy Ways to Lose Weight | Exercise | Reader’s Digest

  • Whipped cream. Just 8 calories in one tablespoon. Drop a dollop over a bowl of fresh fruit for dessert.

    2. Treat high-calorie foods as jewels in the crown. Make a spoonful of ice cream the jewel and a bowl of fruit the crown. Cut down on the chips by pairing each bite with lots of chunky, filling fresh salsa, suggests Jeff Novick, director of nutrition at the Pritikin Longevity Center & Spa in Florida. Balance a little cheese with a lot of salad.

    3. After breakfast, make water your primary drink. At breakfast, go ahead and drink orange juice. But throughout the rest of the day, focus on water instead of juice or soda. The average American consumes an extra 245 calories a day from soft drinks. That’s nearly 90,000 calories a year — or 25 pounds! And research shows that despite the calories, sugary drinks don’t trigger a sense of fullness the way that food does.

One hundred days ago, Dr. Mehmet Oz invited three working mom pals from Detroit to “The Dr. Oz Show” and challenged them to get “beach body ready” for summer. For nearly four months, Tricia Francis, Kerri Ross and Kim Kaczor (seen left to right) exercised six days a week with a trainer and followed Dr. Oz’s B.E.A.C.H. Diet (not to be confused with that other “beach” diet), which emphasizes:
    B – eating Breakfast
E – Eliminating white flours and sugars
A – getting Antioxidants from fruits, vegetables and nuts
C – eating dark Chocolate, a sweet treat that’s also a source of antioxidants
    H – staying Hydrated

“The plan for Kim, Kerri and Tricia was to get their weight, blood pressure and BMI down to healthy levels, not only for them to feel better and live longer, but to look better in time for summer,” said Dr. Oz. “Having each other was a huge factor in their success. So was meal planning and setting aside time for exercise. It makes me so happy when I see guests reach their goals.”

On Tuesday, Kim, Kelli and Tricia returned to “The Dr. Oz Show” to show off their new slimmed-down bodies — and share their secrets for success. That’s Fit spoke with each of the gals and got even more details about what helped them achieve their goals. Here’s what they told us.

Maltbie’s Weight Loss Secrets: Golf Digest

Veteran NBC sports on-course reporter Roger Maltbie is thinner these days. A meeting with weight-loss coach Larry Jacobs last year during a Champions Tour event changed his life.

Maltbie, 58, a five-time winner on the PGA Tour, has always enjoyed a good meal and libation. Add a busy schedule — he’ll do 24 events for NBC this year, including the U.S. Open June 17-20 at Pebble Beach — and maintaining a proper weight has been a challenge.

“I was sitting in the trailer in the NBC compound,” Maltbie tells Golf Digest Contributing Editor Mark Soltau. “This fellow tapped on the door and asked if we could talk. I didn’t have any idea who he was, but I said, ‘Sure.’ He said, ‘I don’t know of any gentle way to do this: Would you like to lose weight?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I would.’ And he said, ‘Great. Let’s get started.’ ”
