Support Groups for Diet Accountability: Maximize Weight Loss Results by Seeking Support

Support Groups for Diet Accountability Maximize Weight Loss Results by Seeking Support

Surrounding yourself with positive, supportive people during your weight loss journey is critical. Losing weight can be an emotional roller coaster. Going it alone is difficult, if not impossible. Everyone needs someone in their corner cheering for them.

The Purpose of a Circle of Support

The main reason to enlist help in your weight loss journey is to find accountability. It often helps just to have to answer to someone else about your food, exercise and weight loss. Emotionally, it helps to have someone who you can relate to and vice versa. It’s also helpful knowing that someone is rooting for you and is there for you whenever you have a triumph or a weak moment.

Your Immediate Circle of Support for Weight Loss

People generally turn to their families first for support. If you can get active together as a family and choose to make healthier choices as a group it will help you to lose weight. But often times it isn’t that simple. As much as you want your relatives to understand your journey and your needs, they may not want to help for a variety of reasons.

  • They get jealous of your weight loss success.
  • They aren’t ready to change their lifestyle.
  • They are at a different health and fitness level.
  • They don’t have the positive attitude you need to succeed.
  • They are comfortable with the role thy have as the smaller person in the relationship and therefore do not want to see you lose weight.

Seek Additional Diet Support

When you don’t find the support you need from your family, it is time to branch out. It isn’t as important where you find the support as how ell the support system works for you.

What to Look for in a Weight Loss Support Partner

  • Someone you can relate to.
  • Someone who will give and take support and advice.
  • Someone you can trust.
  • Someone who is readily available by phone or email.
  • Someone who is going through a similar experience.

Where To Find Weight Loss Support

The first thing you need to do when seeking a support circle is evaluate your needs. What type of support are you looking for? Do you prefer phone calls, emails or face-to-face conversation? How much time do you have to devote to the support circle? Are you just looking for accountability or a whole lot more?

Once you have the answers to these questions you can find the type of support that is right for your needs. You may want a one-on-one relationship, an online message board or a local weight loss support group. If there isn’t already a group in your area, take the initiative and start a group of your own.

Comments you have to WANT to quit..
I QUIT boozing without AA or without doctor-medication help.
I am a chocoholic. I have to WANT to be thin, sexy and beautiful to lose weight.
I have to forgive my hurts in life. I have to forgive people who have tortured my childhood, my adult life.. I have to forgive my ONE parent who was so jealous of me who hates to be seen with me who makes me look like a bad person in front of her family/siblings.
I have to get rid of the bad to get the good out of life.

I have to WANT to do it. Until then, I’m destined to give in to my chocolate Devil.. my cheese devil, my butter devil, etc..
Most call it “loving yourself”..
I don’t, I call it forgiving the hurts in your life… Once you forgive to put your angered heart to rest, only then will you lose your weight.
I have yo-yo’ed all my life.
I’m now fatter (obese) then I ever have been. I hang around negative minded people, they don’t care. Until I find positive thinking people..people who CARE about themselves to REALLY TRULY care in helping me get beyond the hurdles, THEN I will care to help myself.

Thats my theory.. maybe I read it online..
I haven’t found it yet but I KNOW I will.
(I got to say NO to my son who loves the Golden Corral!! )
I’ve got to say NO NO and stick to it, to stay away from the candy machine in my apt complex!
I only started caring this year, maybe since April of 2009, when I looked hideous in my summer blouses..pulled buttons across my boobs, & too tight across my hips! OMG!
Wore sweats all winter… :(

Tracy — thanks for this article. For me, weight loss hasn’t been so much about knowing “what to do” — I’ve read plenty of books and watched plenty of CNN stories to basically know what I need to eat. It’s about “doing it”. I’ve done so much better when I feel like I have someone other than myself that I am going to disappoint of I don’t stick to my plan. First, it was my daughter, but when she left for college, I had to find someone else. Recently, I’ve been using a website for support, which is great because I don’t have to go to a focus group somewhere. The site is www.ichange.com, where they have counselors and support groups, and I got going on it for free. I’ve also tried (and failed) working with my best friend, because her diet is worse than mine and she brings me down when it comes to eating, more often than she props me up. Sometimes it’s more helpful to team up with someone you don’t know or have a history with, but that still wants you to succeed. Ok, now here I go back to avoiding the Christmas cookies…
