I Need Help to Lose Weight
Hi Jarina,
The fact that you believe “quitting is not an option†may be the most important factor toward achieving your weight-loss goal. You see, I believe it takes willpower to lose weight. And clearly you have willpower or you wouldn’t have been able to muster the courage it took to post your request for help.
You need willpower to resist the pleasure of eating good-tasting food. Eating and storing calories is also a survival instinct. Plus, companies spend a lot of money trying to convince you to eat the food they produce. So, to counteract all these powerful urges to eat more than you really need to, you must have a powerful counterbalance. That’s why it is so important to convince yourself that losing weight is a top priority – a “failure is not an option†kind of goal.
Picture yourself 100 pounds lighter, and imagine how great you are going to feel, both physically and mentally, when you achieve that goal. Once you imagine that great feeling, lock on to it, think about it often, amplify it – that is the great feeling you are striving for. That feeling is 100 times better than any short-lived pleasure you will gain from eating something you shouldn’t. Then, the next time you have an urge to eat you’re favorite fattening food, resist the temptation by focusing on the pleasure you are going to feel when you achieve your weight-loss objective.
Unfortunately, the immediate gratification of eating, often outweighs (pardon the pun) the delayed gratification of achieving your weight-loss objective. So, right then and there, when you resist the urge to eat something you shouldn’t, appreciate how empowering it feels to exert your willpower to say no, and consciously experience the immediate gratification of taking one step closer toward achieving your goal. Now you can compare apples to apples – the immediate pleasure of eating versus the immediate pleasure of exerting your willpower to move toward your weight-loss goal. And when you go to bed at night knowing you had a good day – reward yourself mentally – pat yourself on the back and allow yourself to experience the pleasure of getting closer to your goal. Do the same the next morning. Do it is often as possible. You must convince yourself that resisting the urge to break your diet is more pleasurable than eating something you shouldn’t.
Please note, I’m not suggesting that you must resist the urge to eat your favorite foods for the rest of your life. That would take too much willpower. All you have to do is resist the urge more often than not, and when you do give in to temptation, try to exert your willpower to eat smaller portions. And of course, if you can exert your willpower to replace fattening food with fruit and veggies as often as possible, that too will help you move closer toward your weight-loss goal.
You say you tried “eating small,†which I interpret to mean eating smaller portions (a.k.a., portion control). That should work if you can exert your willpower to stick to your portion control diet more often than not.
I’m sure you can do this. Good luck!
