How To Lose Weight Without Dieting: “Conquering the Munchie Monster” Book Review

How To Lose Weight Without Dieting “Conquering the Munchie Monster” Book Review

Author Robert Ferguson believes that it’s necessary to think like a winner in your mind in order to achieve your goals. He applies this postive thinking attitude towards those he helps in shedding the pounds. “It’s not enough to know everything about nutrition, exercise, and human behavior” says Ferguson, “but the drive to succeed must be apparent and the #1 overriding factor in one’s weight loss goals.”

It’s a Lifestyle, Not a Diet

The biggest surprise that separates his book from so many other “diet” books is that he tailors his methods to living a healthy lifestyle rather than a quick fix. The book promotes the notion that diets don’t work and eating healthy for the long term is the key to success.

Labels that say “Trans Fats”

Just because the label says “trans fat free” or “no trans fats” don’t trust it. Become a label detective and read the ingredients to make sure none of the following are listed which are Trans Fats:

  1. Hydrogenated Oils
  2. Partially Hydrogenated Oils
  3. Fractionated Oils
  4. Vegetable Shortening
  5. Lard

Start Your Day Right

Ferguson states that one of the most important parts of a healthy lifestyle is to eat breakfast everyday. For those who have trouble or make excuses that there’s not enough time, Ferguson suggests to make time by waking up 10 minutes earlier. In fact, he states that the easist way to gain weight is by skipping breakfast or eating only one or two meals a day.

Burn Fat, Not Muscles

For every pound of lean muscle you lose, you slow your metabolism by an average of 55 calories a day. At this reduced rate of burned calories, it would result in gaining 10 pounds of fat.

Avoid the Following for 21 Days

Read the labels and choose alternatives to these five food types:

  1. Foods in which sugar is listed in the 1st through 4th ingredients
  2. White and enriched wheat flours
  3. Deep-fried and breaded foods
  4. Added Salt (Sodium)
  5. Alcoholic beverages

The book goes into more detail about the reasons to avoid each of these foods. But the main purpose of doing this for 21 days is that you won’t experience the benefits until enough time has passed for them to have left your body. By following this simple step, you will experience increased energy, more restful sleep, and a slimmer waistline.

Metabolism Myth

Ferguson reveals something that appears opposite of other dieticians, but then again he promotes himself as a nutritionist, not a dietican. “Eating less frequently actually causes your metabolism to slow down.” says Ferguson. “Unfortunately, many people are so busy with work and life that eating has become an inconvenience to them.”

Eat Every 2 Hours

Ferguson reinforces the idea that people should eat regardless if they feel hungry or not. Eating every 2 hours fuels the furnace that is our stomachs. If the stomach continually receives food, it does its job on a regular basis. If food stops arriving for 4, 6, or 8 hours, then the stomach drastically slows its digestion and enters into fat storing mode. A second problem arises because the person now feels starved and will tend to overeat in the next meal, thus overloading a slow working stomach.

Staying Motivated

Ferguson clearly motivates with a passion. The numerous steps are easy for anyone to follow, but the biggest obstacle is always in getting people to apply the methods. For anyone needing inspiration, motivation, and a drive to succeed in his weight loss goals, then Conquering the Munchie Monster is a must read.
