Combine diet and exercise to lose weight, say experts
Researchers at Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC) of Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU), U.S., established that cutting calories through diet alone might not be beneficial in losing weight; bouts of workout are also essential for the same.
Principal researcher and senior scientist, Judy Cameron Ph.D., ONPRC said, “This study demonstrates that there is a natural body mechanism which conserves energy in response to a reduction in calories.â€
“Diet and exercise must be combined to achieve this goal,†added Cameron, also a professor of behavioral neuroscience and obstetrics and gynecology, OHSU School of Medicine, and professor of psychiatry, University of Pittsburgh.
“Healthcare providers need to speak with patients about the importance of exercise for weight loss,†stated the study authors.
Details of the study
To reach this conclusion, researchers conducted the study on 18 female rhesus macaque monkeys at ONPRC by dividing the primates into two groups.
One was fed with high fat diet for several years and another comparison group of three monkeys was given normal monkey diet.
This group also performed hourly exercise on a treadmill on a regular basis.
The first group was later returned to a low-fat diet with 30 percent reduced calories for a month and its activity levels were studied using an activity monitor.
Results of the study
On analysis, it was revealed that when calories in the subjects’ diet were reduced the amount of activity also diminished.
On the contrary, monkeys in the comparison group reportedly lost weight.
It was thus explained that reducing calories for the first group caused a reduction in activity than weight loss.
Study collaborator and post-doctoral researcher at OHSU, Elinor Sullivan, Ph.D. said, “Naturally occurring levels of physical activity for the animals began to diminish soon after the reduced-calorie diet began.â€
“When caloric intake was further reduced in a second month, physical activity in the monkeys diminished even further,†added the researcher.
“The finding that reducing calories is not enough to facilitate weight loss is also noteworthy for tackling childhood obesity through community interventions,†stated the authors.
“Exercise is necessary for weight loss to counteract decreased energy expenditure that naturally occurs from consuming fewer calories,†concluded the researchers.
The study appears in American Journal of Physiology–Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology.
