Chili peppers may help lose weight

The novel study at the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition links the consumption of jalapenos, habaneros, and serranos to weight loss.

The findings suggest that heat generated by peppers can actually cause your body to burn more calories and “oxidise” layers of fat.

Spicy hotness of chili peppers burn calories
The UCLA scientists’ team says that increased concentration of capsaicin, the compound that makes peppers hot, has been linked to weight loss.

The researchers explain that after ingesting spicy foods capsaicin causes a person’s pain receptors in their mouth to send messages to the brain to send relief†quickly. The brain, in turn, reacts by increasing adrenaline levels and pumping up heart rate, which causes sweating and increased calorie burn.

Capsaicin, DCT lend same effects
While all peppers have some level of capsaicin in them, the hotter the pepper, the higher the capsaicin levels, adding jalapenos, serranos and habaneros to your diet may help you shed those extra inches around the waistline with little effort, suggests the study.

But, for those who do not like the burning sensation that pepper causes, there is other natural alternative. Dihydrocapsiate (DCT), a version of capsaicin does not cause burning sensation but lends the same effects as the capsaicin does in weight loss.

Study details
To reach their findings, the research team, led by Dr David Heber, recruited 34 people who were trying to lose weight and were willing to consume a low-calorie, liquid diet for 28 days. They were randomly given either a placebo or supplements that contained DCT in one of two doses.

The researchers split the volunteers into two groups. The control group got a placebo pill, while the active group received supplements that contained dihydrocapsiate (DCT) in one of two doses.

After monitoring their energy expenditure, Dr Heber and colleagues found that those volunteers taking the highest level of DCT had the highest expenditure. This group almost doubled the number of calories they burned compared to the control group. The DCT participants also showed more fat-burning than their counterparts.

The findings were presented April 27 at the Experimental Biology 2010 meeting in Anaheim CA as part of the scientific program of the American Society for Nutrition.

Peppers spice up human health
In recent years hot peppers have received positive opinions from many researchers for their antioxidant, or cancer-fighting, properties. Hot peppers are also good sources of many vitamins and minerals including vitamin A, vitamin C, folate, potassium, and manganese, and contain no carbohydrates.

Capsaicin, the ingredient in hot peppers that makes them spicy, has been shown to help in the treatment of certain chronic health conditions. Anti-inflammatory properties of the plants have been tapped for treatment of migraines, arthritis and muscle pain.

Hot peppers contain about 3 grams of fiber, which can help increase satiety, causing you to eat less.
